Gastric Sleeve Surgery

General informations

Gastric sleeve is the most common minimally invasive bariatric surgery, where approximately 90% of the stomach is removed through incisions of 5-12 mm using laparoscopic surgical instruments.

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and lasts from 60 to 90 minutes, with hospitalization for two days after the intervention to manage pain and any temporary side effects such as nausea.

Limiting the size of the stomach decreases the amount of food that can be consumed and involves hormonal changes that reduce or eliminate hunger and early satiety, thus helping with weight loss. This also helps alleviate conditions associated with excess weight, such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, type II diabetes, sleep apnea, or liver dysfunction caused by obesity-induced steatosis. Additionally, it has been shown to improve infertility rates, as obesity is a significant cause of hormonal disorders.

Another advantage of the gastric sleeve is that once the patient reaches a normal weight, gaining a small number of kilograms during pregnancy minimizes the risk of fetal complications. It is known that newborns from operated mothers have a risk of presenting various complications during the neonatal period.

Patients typically reach their optimal weight about 12 months after the intervention.
